Sustainable Initiatives

EEGA pilot project conducted between September and October 2025, on Salt Licks installation, funded by the

East Coast Zoological Foundation Wildlife Emergency Fund (WEF) to support wildlife conservation at the Dja Wildlife Reserve, a biodiversity hot spot within the Congo Basin

Project Rationale

Recent torrential rainfall across Cameroon caused flooding in many natural habitats in the East. Within the Dja Fauna Reserve, heavy rains have caused leaching of natural salt licks used by gorillas. The goal of this project was to create artificial salt licks at strategic locations within the northern site of the Dja Wildlife Reserve, to provide essential minerals to gorillas and associated wildlife species, thereby reducing encounters with humans as they wander in search of these minerals, hence mitigating human-wildlife conflicts.
